Server-based networks offer important advantages: enhanced security, both external and internal; shared access to data; remote access allowing employees to work wherever they have an internet connection; and centralized email or groupware, to name a few. On the other hand, cloud based services like Google Apps Premier and Dropbox are altering the dynamic.

A year ago we would have said that any organization with more than 5 full-time office employees was hurting itself it they did not get a server. Now we reserve judgment until we know more about your specific requirements. It is worth noting that office network speeds are typically several hundred times faster than an internet connection, so the cloud should be used judiciously. In our view, the office network server, in some form, is here to stay. If nothing else, you need one for reliable backups.
